Farmers Helping Farmers is the brain child of Sydney based businessman, originally from the Philippines, Mr Denis Alarcon.
Like many other 'Sydney-siders' before him, Dennis, along with his wife and children, purchased a 'holiday/weekender' property on the western side of the Blue Mountains, surrounded by Graziers. Although not running any livestock himself, Dennis witnessed the devastating affect that drought, fire and flood had on farmers and livestock and thought that if he could help the livestock, this in turn would offer some relief to the farmers.
"I AM NOT A FARMER - HOW DO I HELP?"
After a long discussion with a neighboring Farmer, Dennis made a firm decision to start a charity that would simply source livestock fodder and supplements. The charity originally had a different name, however 'Farmers Helping Farmers' seemed a little more appropriate and so the name was changed last year.
Due to Dennis' lack of farming knowledge, he knew he would need volunteers with farming experience if this was going to work. One farmer agreed to take on the enormous task of Volunteer Operations Manager and all that entails, running Farmers Helping Farmers for 10 years, retiring in August of 2019 due to ill health.
Farmers Helping Farmers is now a network of farming community volunteers, across all states, working with one common interest.. Helping struggling farming families.
Dennis says it fills his heart with joy to know that in some small way he is helping make a difference to Aussie farmers in need. 'If our contribution gives one farmer, respite for one day or one week, it is one day or one week they do not have to worry for.'
